Combining music, video, and narrative, Hours of Freedom: The Story of the Terezín Composer presents works by 14 composers imprisoned in the Theresienstadt (Terezín) Concentration Camp during World War II, including Viktor Ullmann, Gideon Klein, Pavel Haas, and Hans Krása. Aware that their situation was extremely fragile and that their lives were threatened, these artists—many of whom were in their 20s and 30s when they were murdered—created music as an affirmation of the future. Some of their compositions reflect personal, eyewitness accounts of the agony and suffering in Terezín, while others express the assurance of a return to life as it was before the war. Hours of Freedom: The Story of the Terezín Composer was created by conductor Murry Sidlin and features the ensemble Prague Modern and a quartet of singers.
