2017 Rafael Schächter Institute for Arts and Humanities:
A Revitalization of Jewish Monuments in the Czech Republic

May 13–22, 2017

The highlight of the 2017 Rafael Schächter Institute for Arts and Humanities will be a first of its kind tour focused on visits to nine of ten historic, beautifully restored synagogues found throughout the Czech Republic. Prague will serve as our home base most nights, with day-trips to these important synagogues and their surrounding communities. Of course, there will also be a day devoted to touring the old Jewish Quarter of Prague and other important sites including Prague Castle. The tour will conclude with a private, guided tour of Terezín led by a Survivor on Saturday, and the annual Terezín Commemoration Ceremony followed by a performance of Maestro Murry Sidlin’s newest concert-drama, Hours of Freedom: The Story of the Terezín Composer on Sunday. Our professional guide for the tour will be David Kraus, and the tour will be accompanied by staff members from The Defiant Requiem Foundation and musicians specially chosen by Maestro Sidlin to add musical context to these important historical locations. We will also be joined by Foundation Board Member and Secretary of the Federation of Jewish Communities in the Czech Republic, Tomáš Kraus; local community leaders and experts; and translators, as needed.

Tour logistics in the Czech Republic will be included in the cost and coordinated by the Foundation. This includes lodging, transportation to the synagogues and other sites, several meals and the private tours in Prague and Terezín. Travel to and from the Czech Republic and airport transfers are not included. Economical pricing and a detailed itinerary will be sent by the end of the year via email and posted on the Foundation’s website. Space is limited to approximately 30 travelers.

A limited number of fellowships for individuals active in Holocaust work and education will be available. The application and more details will be posted online on the Foundation website on January 2, 2017. The deadline for application submissions is February 1.
